BIRMINGHAM RECORD COLLECTORS

DEDICATED TO THE COLLECTING OF MUSIC, ITS PRESERVATION, AND LASTING FRIENDSHIP

MONTHLY MEETING THIS SUNDAY, JUNE 12th, 2016

2:00 PM HOMEWOOD LIBRARY – 1721 OXMOOR ROAD 35209

NEXT MEETING SUNDAY, JULY 10th, 2016 THE SECOND SUNDAY

THIS MONTH’S MEETING

Who was that person or group doing the backing singing on that song? Not many times do we ask that question because we are so caught up in the lead singers voice and lyrics. But there has been some great backup vocals that we should have asked about. At this month’s meeting we will view a video entitled, ‘Twenty Feet From Stardom’. The film brings the backup singer out of the shadows and into the spotlight albeit decades later. Be with us and see who that was hitting those high notes or singing that catchy phrase.

We will also go over preparations for our August record show. Still lots of work to do and volunteers are needed.

And as always there will be boxes of vinyl for sale. Hopefully you can find those recordings you have been searching for.

SNACKS: It’s Don’s turn to bring the snacks and refreshments. Next month it will be Gary’s turn. Remember, if you are the person scheduled to bring the goodies, you will be responsible for taking home any snacks and drinks at the meeting the month before. Thanks.

2016 BIRMINGHAM RECORD COLLECTORS MUSIC HALL OF FAME INDUCTEES

Another great class of inductees have been selected for this year’s HOF. Included will be what we call the Birmingham Legends which consist of four local singers and a WSGN Good Guys DJ reunion some of which include Dave Roddy, Joey Roberts, Glen Powers, Miss Midnight, Don Martin, and others that are still being searched for. Also included will be a drummer that has quite a resume and was our guest speaker at our monthly meeting in March. Here are the names and a little about each. Induction and concert info is listed below as well.

BIRMINGHAM LEGENDS:

Fletcher ‘Sputnick’ Shepperd: Drummer, singer and dancer. Has performed with James Brown, Jackie Wilson, and The Pointer Sisters just to name a few. Still performs locally with various bands.

Elnora Spencer: Singer and songwriter specializing in blues, jazz, gospel, and R&B. Still performing today.

Art Grayson: Singer and guitarist. Was part of the first all-black cast of the television show, The Beat, along with Marvin Gaye, Carla Thomas, Brook Benton, and Diana Ross. Played guitar in Gatemouth Brown’s band. An original member of The Commodores. Today, Art runs his own business in Birmingham and is very active in community activities.

Sam Frazier, Jr: Singer, harmonica player, songwriter. Listened to many great blues singers as a child who played at a ‘shot house’ run by his mother. One of the singers, Sonny Boy Williamson gave Sam his first harmonica. Early career included playing the harp while playing drums with his feet. Went to New York for recording sessions. Returned to Birmingham and joined gospel group, The Golden Hummingbirds. Met Country Boy Eddie while working at a car dealership. Became a regular on Eddie’s TV show and spent 14 years with him. Still performing today.

Along with these performers we will have the DJ’s mentioned above. All were WSGN Good Guys and were part of the Birmingham music and entertainment community at events such as Sky Castle broadcasts, antenna balls, school spirit contests, and weekend dances. They too are part of he Legends of Birmingham.

Roger Clark is our other inductee. Roger has been a percussionist for over 40 years. Accompanied and appeared with The Doobie Brothers, Chuck Berry, Tower Of Power, Uriah Heep, Journey, Steely Dan, Eddie Money, J Geils Band, The Steve Miller Band, Tammy Wynette, Hank Williams Jr., Tom Jones, Paul Anka, America, Alabama, Little Anthony, Travis Wammack, and the list goes on. Appears on over 30 platinum LP’s. Still performing today.

WOW! What a great class the HOF committee came up with this year. All are scheduled to perform for us at our concert Saturday night as well as a meet and greet before the show. Here is the tentative schedule for that Saturday night.

6:30 – 7:30: Induction ceremony for the class of 2016.

7:30: Concert with Roger Harris and the Hall of Fame Band as opening act. Then each of our inductees, Fletcher ‘Sputnick’ Sheppard, Elnora Spencer, Art Grayson, and Sam Frazier, Jr will perform. Our other inductee, Roger Clark will perform with the Hall of Fame Band as drummer on some of the songs as well.

Tickets prices and purchasing info will be provided in next month’s newsletter. This event will be on Saturday, August 20 at the Gardendale Civic Center. Our record show is at one end of the building and the induction and concert is at the other end. Hope to see you there.

32ND ANNUAL BIRMINGHAM RECORD COLLECTORS RECORD & CD SHOW

The weekend of August 20th & 21st will be our annual record & CD show. 9 AM – 5 PM on Saturday and 10 AM – 4 PM on Sunday. On Friday, August 19th we begin setting up at 9 AM. We hope to open up for the dealers to begin their setup process around noon. As things begin to settle down and the dealers are in place the remainder of that day, until around 9 PM will be our member and dealer time for buying and selling. Please be respectful of all the dealers as they are getting their area prepared. Make sure they are ready to sell before you start searching through their goods. Any person who is not a dealer or member can be a part of the day providing they join the club. $25 for a year or $50 for lifetime membership.

There will be forms for new members and they will receive a name tag. All members should have name tags during that day so we will know who is in the building. We have printed new membership cards for all lifetime members and if you haven’t gotten your yet you can pick it up at the show. If you are a lifetime member and you find that a card has not been printed for you, please let me know so I can get one for you.

Volunteers will be needed in these areas: Friday setup. Security check before we leave on Friday & Saturday night. Door workers for Saturday and Sunday. Tear down and clean up on Sunday afternoon. There is more information coming next month concerning our HOF induction and concert Saturday night and an update on providing food, snack, and refreshments at the show. Don’t miss it. VOLUNTEER!
