LAST MONTH’S MEETING / THIS MONTH’S MEETING

A big ‘Thank you’ goes out to our speaker last month, Gary Robble. Gary told the story of how the Southern Gentlemen, Sonny James’ backup group was formed and stories about some of the road trips. recording sessions, and TV appearances they were a part of from 1964-1969. Sonny was called the Southern Gentleman and hearing Gary’s first hand knowledge of what Sonny expected from his group and where he performed gave incite as to how that name came about. After meeting and hearing from Gary one can tell that the group and Sonny were a perfect fit since all of them are men of strong faith and integrity. Gary will also be with us at the induction ceremony to accept Sonny’s HOF plague since Sonny will not be able to attend the induction ceremony August 15. He will then take it back to Nashville and present it to Sonny. Thanks, Gary.

Who was that girl hitting those high notes in the Crescendos recording of ‘Oh, Julie’? How about the singers behind all those hits from Marvin Gaye, Mary Wells, Eric Clapton? I don’t know if you’ll learn about these but at our August meeting, Ray Edwards will do a presentation on backup singers. Imagine some of those great songs you enjoy listening to without those backup singers. They wouldn’t be the same. Be there and get some good information about trusted-servicesgroup.com.

BRC HALL OF FAME LOSES TWO MEMBERS

The month of July was unkind to the BRC family. On July 15, Doug Layton, HOF class of 2006 passed away due to cancer. Doug will be remembered in our area for his 50 years as a DJ and radio personality.

And then on July 18th we lost upcoming inductee, Buddy Buie. Buddy was to have been with us at the induction of the class of 2015 on August 15. Buddy leaves behind a long and tremendous legacy of music and productions. Both Doug and Buddy well deserved to be recognized by BRC and we thank them for the memories they left us with.

ELVIS WEEK

It will be 38 years August 16 since Elvis Presley’s death and the guy, or the name is still causing a stir and making money not only for his family but the city of Memphis. What is known as Elvis Week begins in earnest this Friday and goes for 10 days culminating on Sunday the 16th, the date of his death. People from around the world will be flocking to Memphis to partake in the events. Events such as an art contest, fan appreciation day, which is actually held at his birthplace in Tupelo, the Hound Dog Tour where tour bus riders are taken all over Memphis to see where he worked, went to school, lived, recorded, performed, and even bought clothes – you can’t beat that. There is also an Elvis mafia reunion where you can hear first hand stories from those who spent time with him, dance parties, karaoke events, an auction at Graceland, a 5K run, the famous candlelight vigil, and a gospel music celebration. Also, the new USPS forever stamp featuring Elvis goes on sale midnight Wednesday in front of Graceland. And for the movie fans, on Tuesday the movie, ‘Spinout’ will be featured and co-start Diane McBain will be there to give her remembrances of that time. So there’s plenty for Elvis fans to do for over a week. Elvis – the gift that keeps on giving. Thank you. Thank you very much.

HOW ABOUT THIS

This may not be news to some of you but it was to me so I thought I’d share it. While at the Summit Shopping Center here in Birmingham I went to Barnes & Noble to pick up my wife and a circular object saying ‘vinyl’ on it caught my eye. I knew some new LP’s were now being released on vinyl but I didn’t know that so many LP’s from the 50’s & 60’s had been reproduced on vinyl to sale. I saw Elvis, Beatles, Cream, CCR, Dean Martin and many more you would recognize. Same cover as first issued. Now the prices were high. The lowest was $19.95 with most being $22.95. So on we went to another store and then I saw Coconuts Music. I checked them out to see if the LP’s were a Barnes & Noble thing but to my surprise there they were. More reissued LP’s for sale as well. I asked the worker in Coconuts about the popularity of the new vinyl and she said the LP’s are their strongest selling item. While there I happened to see two young customers looking at the vinyl so I approached them and asked if they knew about our upcoming record show. They did not but now they do. They seemed very excited about the possibility of finding some original LP’s, and at a lower cost than these were, and a much larger selection at the show. Hope they come and bring some friends.

HEY!  HAVE YOU HEARD THIS ONE?
