Congratulations to the HOF class of 2010 and many thanks to them for the fun, excitement, and memories they brought us in and around the southeast and nationally as they provided music lovers, dancers, and teenagers many days and nights of good, fun music. Once again we see the tremendous amount of talent that came out of Birmingham and the state of Alabama since the beginning of recorded music and it continues even today. All of this year’s inductees are scheduled to be with us on Sunday, August 22 for the induction ceremony. Jerry Woodard, who passed away in 1980, will have members of his family present. Plan on being a part of this exciting event.

16. NORTHERN SOUL: Originating in Britain in the late 1960’s this music is all about dance music. The mod scene in Britain began listening heavily to black American soul music. Most of the songs chosen are those of lesser known artists and from smaller record labels. The dancing features flips, dips, and spins. These moves came from black American performers that toured Britain during the 60’s. The term northern soul was first used in 1970. It was used to differentiate the funkier sounds from the smoother sounds that the dancers wanted. British collectors and club DJ’s quite often come to the states to find the 45’s they need to play for their patrons.
