ANOTHER ALABAMA PERFORMER
From Killen, Alabama comes a piano player by the name of Monty Olive. Monty’s style of playing and singing was compared to that of Fats Domino. Although he never got the national airplay his recordings were very popular locally. He was another of those who made a musical instrument his “friend”. Monty tells it this way. “I’ve never had a piano lesson. When I first started playing, I would get the melody of a tune set in my mind and try and find the proper keys for it. It was fun and I practiced it everyday.” Sounds easy doesn’t it? SURE!! Monty entertained in many cities across the country including D.C., Detroit, Dallas, and at Panama City’s Old Dutch Inn. From an interview in the Time Tri-Cities Daily, August 13th, 1957 Monty put it this way. “Everywhere I go I respond to the crowds. I feel the touch of my music. It’s something you can’t explain. I enjoy performing.”
When he started looking for an agent he contacted Jewel Ware who after hearing him strum the guitar and sing two songs knew he had some special talent in presenting a song. Jewel signed him to a contract and had him record on her J & J label. He had three records released on the J & J label. Those were “Pain Inside My Heart” / Foggy River”, “Molly Darling” / “Belle Of The Bar Room” and “Mary Lee” / “Follow Me”. On the “Pain Inside My Heart” were soul singers Carol Thomas and Teresa Horton with Bill Cofield on the sax, Lennie Mann on the drums, and James King on electric guitar. I list those to see if anyone reading this may know more about these people. On his second release which was probably the rocker, “Mary Lee”, he was scheduled to have backing him The Hacker Brothers, a rock & roll band from Leighton, Alabama.
I don’t know where Monty is now but he left some good music and did as he said his recordings were meant to do, “Make people happy with my talents. I love to entertain them.” If you have any more info about Monty, Jewel, or the others please let me know.

13. BEACH MUSIC: A regional genre which developed from various musical styles of the forties, fifties and sixties. The style of music ranges from big band swing to blues/jump blues, jazz, doo wop, R&B, and rock and roll. Its roots go back to the late forties when Billboard magazine announced “Swing is dead, bands are out, vocalists are in.” Teenagers enjoyed the music they heard on the juke boxes in beach clubs rather then the Top 40 they heard on the radio. This type music included artists such as The Dominoes, Mary Wells, The Tams, The Showmen, and The Five Royals. Even today there are website and radio shows dedicated to this type music. Here are some examples.

14. GARGARE ROCK: A raw form of rock and roll made famous from around 1962-1967. Since so many of the bands were thought to have been comprised of young amateurs, mostly middle-class teenagers, and probably rehearsed in the family garage the name was given. At its beginning it was not recognized separate from all rock. The name came during the 70’s. It is genre of music that is very collectible. Give these a listen.
