SPECIAL GUEST AT THIS MONTH’S MEETING

Be sure and be at our January meeting and hear from our very own Sammy Salvo. Sammy has quite a history in the music industry and it all started here. He recorded for RCA in the 50’s. Had a # 23 hit with “Oh, Julie”. During his career he recorded with people such as Chet Atkins, Boots Randolph, Jerry Reed, Joe South, Floyd Cramer, and The Jordanaires.

Come and hear Sammy’s story straight from him. We’ve heard about all the personalities that made local music possible and Sammy worked with them all. Don’t miss this chance. Bring a friend.

I hope Santa was good to everyone this year. Speaking of Santa, at our December meeting we had a great time playing Dirty Santa. Everyone left with a great gift. Well, maybe a good gift. Well, maybe a gift. Anyway we all had some good laughs and fellowship. We also had our 2nd annual “Free For All”. Members brought records they were willing to give away, so everyone got the chance to search through these “prizes” and take what they wanted. The amount of records brought this year surpassed last year’s number. There were around 12-15 boxes with an estimated 2,000 records or more. Thanks for those who brought a box or 2. The “Free For All” has been fun for all. Hey, I spotted what looked to be an Elvis Sun label but Tom Spitzey grabbed it before I could get a good grip on it so I don’t know what it was and he ain’t telling. Check out these pictures and you’ll get an ideal of what went on.

ELVIS 75
On January 8th of this year Elvis would have been 75 years old. Elvis brought together the sound & feel of R&B and mixed it with his country style and made Rock & Roll a genre of music. Just released is the box set, Elvis 75. Ought to be some good music, photos, and info included.

Check out these quotes concerning Elvis, pro and con.

GENRES OF MUSIC

As collectors and fans of music we have all been introduced to various kinds of music over the years. It was brought to my attention that as this year progresses we should list the different genres of music we have heard of and see what kind of a list we have by the December newsletter.

We’ll start this month with a few of the common types and I’ll ask that you send me others to add to the list each month.
1. Doo Wop
2. Rockabilly
3. Blues
4. Jazz
5. Country
6. Pop
7. Soul
8. R&B

That’s a good start that I’m sure includes much of the music we listen to but some can be broken down even more and then there are many genre names given to many other styles. So, show me what ya got. Send me a few and I’ll add them as the year goes by.

UPCOMING MEETINGS

NEXT MONTH’S MEETING AGENDA IS STILL IN THE WORKS.

WE ARE PLANNING ON ANOTHER IN-HOUSE RECORD SHOW IN THE SPRING. MORE ON THAT LATER.

THERE’S ALWAYS SOMETHING GOING ON AT THE MEETINGS SO BE SURE TO MARK YOUR CALENDARS AND DROP BY FOR FOOD, FUN, MUSIC AND FELLOWSHIP.

SEE YA,
CHARLIE
