December 2008 Newsletter

Our Monthly Club Meeting will be this Sunday, December 14th at the Homewood Public Library. 2:00 PM
*****Next club meeting will be January 11th, 2008, the second Sunday******

FUN TIME AT THIS MONTH’S MEETING
Be sure to be at this month’s club meeting for our Dirty Santa game and a new event called “Free For All.”
For the Dirty Santa game you are asked to wrap up a 45, LP, CD, or something pertaining to music, gag gifts accepted, and drop in. Rules to be explained at the meeting.

But bringing a gift is not required to be a part of the meeting. With or without a gift, drop by if for no other reason to see the gift Terrell had planned to bring last year but due to illness could not be there and has saved for this year’s game. I hope it’s not a fruitcake, Terrell.

For the “Free For All”, bring that stack or box of records that you don’t want and would be willing to give away and then let everyone dig through them and see what they want. It’s all ‘free for all.” COME AND JOIN IN THE FUN

MAKE SURE YOU ARE LISTENING TO THE RIGHT KIND OF MUSIC
Dr. Michael Miller, M. D. Director, Preventive Cardiology at the University of Maryland's School of Medicine in Baltimore presented at the annual meeting of the American Heart Association the results of a study that he and colleagues conducted. They observed that joyful music can cause blood vessels to dilate, increasing blood flow which is good for cardiovascular health. The participants were healthy, non-smoking volunteers who selected music evoking joy [joyful music] or anxiety [anxious music]. They listened to either the joyful or anxiety music for 30 minutes. After listening to each type of music, blood flow was assessed by brachial artery flow mediated dilation (FMD) and measured as % diameter change. Artery flow mediated dilation (FMD) increased 26% during the music phase that evoked joy compared to a 6% decrease in FMD observed after listening to music that elicited anxiety. Self-selected joyful music was associated with increased FMD to a magnitude previously observed with aerobic activity or statin therapy. WOW! After all the medical talk, the investigators concluded that listening to joyful music may be a useful adjunctive lifestyle measure to promote vascular health. WE KNEW THIS ALREADY.

UPCOMING PROGRAMS AT THE BRC CLUB MEETINGS
In January we are planning another In-House Record Show. This meeting will be dedicated to buying, selling or swapping records and CD’s. Get your items ready and set up at a table. We will also invite some non-members from our mailing list. Bring some friends.

Looking for some interesting websites that are dedicated to searching for songs, doing some research on recording company labels, stations that play oldies or obscure songs or just need an update on how to navigate through the BRC website and maybe do your own radio show? A program is being planned that will help you. If you are new to the computer or can operate one blindfolded, this will be a helpful program for all. Tentatively planned for February or March.

What recordings that are relevant to Alabama do you consider the most important? Club member Andy Millard, who is employed at UAB and is currently writing a book on the local music scene, has picked his top 5. Put your thinking cap on and be prepared to give your top 5. COMING EARLY 2009.

We also have tentative plans on getting Jerry “Boogie” McCain to come and talk to us at a meeting in the near future. More info as soon as it is confirmed.

See ya,
Charlie
