At this month’s meeting, Ben Saxon will present for us a program commemorating the late great Buddy Holly. He has a video, music and plenty of Holly knowledge to share with us. Not only will you see a very entertaining, well planned program but at the end of the program members will receive a DVD of the program. A $40 value. The program will begin at 2:15.
Also at this month’s meeting, Bill Taylor will have copies of the latest TEEN TOWN CD, VOL. 17. Be sure to come and get a copy.
SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT ABOUT FEBRUARY’S MEETING
Our February club meeting will be an “in-house” record/cd show with a twist. We will invite at random 40 non-members from our mailing list to this meeting. We want to make this meeting a mini- record show. Bring a box of records or cd’s so our guests will have plenty of music to look through.
STATE OF THE CLUB ADDRESS
Thanks to all BRC members for making 2007 another good year. We paid all our bills and have funds in the bank for monthly expenses such as for the room we meet in, food and postage. We are able to do this without asking for member contributions. We had good attendance at our monthly meetings, we had excellent attendance at our annual record/cd show, some thought the best we have had in years, all tables were sold for the show, we inducted our 7th class of the BRC Hall Of Fame, there were more BRC radio shows added to our website, and we added 10 new members.
We are now emailing the newsletter to 125 members and mailing 15 copies. This is up 40 members since last January. If you hear of a member that is not getting the newsletter, have them get in touch with me so they can be added to the list.
This year we plan on spicing up our in-house record shows by inviting some non-members from our mailing list as well as invite a dealer to bring his wares to the meeting. I would like to do at least 2-3 of these type shows this year. Many of you bring records and/or cd’s to every club meeting but these meetings will be specifically designed as a mini-show.
Do you have any suggestions for the club? Email or call me (205-226-4738). Looking forward to another great, fun year for the Birmingham Record Collectors.

Jerry Grammer’s article this month comes from memories of his days at Pappy’s Club.
Memories carry me back to the late 50’s and early 60’s. Several clubs in and around the Birmingham area were very important to music. The Club Robert L, Bryan’s, Five O’clock, Allstate, Pappy’s and short lived “The Gaslite” on Morris Avenue. (Known for first featuring Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs!
This is what I remember about Pappy’s Club.
Jim (Pappy) and Margaret Wallace were known to have the best of traveling bands. Most musicians vied for the position, even though the hours were extreme and Pappy was notorious for breaking up bands. He would hire a popular group and then try to fire this one and that one to organize what he wanted. His wants were seldom right, but created much chaos amongst friends.
To keep order in the place, because of long hours, he hired the toughest of bouncers. One (Bobby Ray) was so tough, not many would argue with him anyway. Bobby got one ear bitten off in a scuffle. (This was the entire ear) Enough of the bad.
Groups like Don Love and the Heartbeats, Dan Penn and the Nomads (sometimes known as Danny Lee), the Cavemen, Jerry Woodard, The Jackets, Bobby Mizzell, the Roulettes, and the Tikis, performed there. The list goes far beyond this. I was with several groups there.
If not performing at Pappy’s I might be at the Allstate. Because of the close proximity, we would sometimes drive there on breaks. This proved to be interesting because, a fired musician might be loading his equipment. True, especially, with the Organist, for Don Love and the Heartbeats. Just as we pulled into the lot, he was rolling his instrument over and over, in the gravels! This really got even with Jim, right? I thought I said enough of the bad!
The great thing about Pappy’s (Or any after hours club) was the fact that so many musicians showed up later. There, I met Charlie Walters (Sax) of “The Roulettes” and we remained friends till he died about 3 years ago. I also met many others that sooner or later were in the same group with me. Pappy eventually opened a 2nd club. The Y Club. He hired good groups but the location made it a failure!
Pappy had a strip of rooms alongside the west parking lot. These were for out of town groups and customers (by the hour) tsk tsk!
The evil sun from the east is arising and I must go!
