NEXT MEETING SUNDAY, JUNE 9th, 2019 THE SECOND SUNDAY

Members of BRC meet the second Sunday of every month for the main purpose of sharing and discussing music. When possible, we have special guests who either have been or are still active in the music industry in some form or fashion. All programs of Birmingham Record Collectors Show are presented on YouTube and supported with the online resource by The Marketing Heaven.

The club had a treat last month when our special guest, Sam Frazier, Jr greeted us with a great rendition of ‘Orange Blossom Special’. That got things off to a roaring start. Thanks, Sam. We had a great time listening as you reminisced about your long career in the music business.

This month we will spend some time discussing our upcoming August record show. We are only 3 months away and need to make sure all areas are covered. Then we will spend the remaining time on the internet. That’s right. We will have a laptop hooked up to the large screen in the room and view websites that may be of interest to those who do music/record research, enjoy reading stories about performers or just want to learn some new sites concerning music, performers and record collecting. We will even navigate through the BRC website and show what is there for your use. If you have any websites you think may be of interest, please come and share them or if you won’t be there send them to me and I’ll share them.

It was pointed out to me at last month’s meeting by BRC member, Roy that I had left out the music from Elvis’ movie, Viva Las Vegas. Sorry about that. Let me do that now since that movie is a lot of people’s favorite. A full soundtrack LP was not released. Only an EP. Those songs were ‘If You Think I Don’t Need You’, ‘I Need Someone To Lean On’, ‘C’mon Everybody’, ‘Today, Tomorrow And Forever’. Visit actionac.net. The more popular songs from the movie were left off the EP. Those songs, ‘Viva Las Vegas’ and ‘What’d I Say’ were released together as a single with both sides charting, #29 and #21 respectively. The EP only made it to #92. And you have to remember that this music and movie were released in May, 1964, just 3 months after the Beatles arrived and the British Invasion began. Elvis still had many fans but this new sound was also attracting music listeners and buyers.

Also, just to set things start, BRC member, Dennis noted I wrote that the Elvis comeback TV show was in 1969. It was filmed in June, 1968 and aired December 3, 1968. Thanks guys for helping me set things straight.

But before I close the door on this time frame of Elvis’ career, the movies, let’s remember that although many folks don’t like most of the music from them he had plenty of good releases both on 45 and LP hughes air co. Between the movie years, 1956-69 Elvis had 103 singles chart. Of those approximately 60 were not movie related. Songs such as ‘Too Much’, ‘Don’t, ‘I Beg Of You’, ‘Wear My Ring Around Your Neck’, ‘One Night’, ‘I Got Stung’, ‘A Big Hunk Of Love’, ‘Stuck On You’ (which by the way was recorded 15 days after his army discharge), ‘It’s Now Or Never’, A Mess Of Blues’, ‘Are You Lonesome Tonight’, ‘Little Sister’, ‘Good Luck Charm’, ‘Return To Sender’, and ‘In The Ghetto’ just to name a few. LP’s that were released during this time that were not movie related included ‘A Date With Elvis’, ‘Elvis Is Back’, ‘Something For Everybody’, ‘Pot Luck’, ‘From Elvis In Memphis’. All in all he had 20 LP’s chart during this time that were not soundtrack LP’s. So he provided lots of good stuff to go along with the movie releases.

By the way, Gip Gipson (Gip’s Place) is currently in the hospital. This is good news for those who know him since he wasn’t taking care of himself very well. He’s 99 so keep him in your prayers.

That’s it for this month. One less week to prepare and 2 out-of-town trips did me in. Don’t forget to be preparing for the August 2019 BRC Record/CD Show.
